Texting while on Autopilot
While doing some research on a case I found an interesting statute here in Nevada. In Nevada, it is illegal to use your handheld device while operating a motor vehicle as it is in most states but we have found a neat little clause that seems to be right in line with 2016 and technology.
NRS 484B.165(7) For the purposes of this section, a person shall be deemed not to be operating a motor vehicle if the motor vehicle is driven autonomously through the use of artificial-intelligence software and the autonomous operation of the motor vehicle is authorized by law.
We live in a time of real tension and danger between law enforcement and the public. Make sure to be polite, courteous, and respectful. Move slowly, keep your hands in view at all times, and ask the officer if you can reach for your wallet.
What this means is that if you are in your car using the autopilot feature you can text on your phone. It also means that the State will have a harder time proving any type of DUI.
